What are the chatbox rules of etiquette?

There is no established set of rules, except that the forum rules of course apply here, too. However, there is one exception - private messages.
1) If you send another member a pm while chatting with others, please do not tell him/her about it in the chatbox. Other members might feel that the two of you are talking behind their backs, or might just plainly feel left out. That's not fair.
2) It IS ok to tell the recipient that he has a message waiting when it is clear to all parties that this message is not very private at all - for example, containing a longer text for which the chatbox is unsuitable, or if it is about a forum-related business (such as questions to me or Mariah).
